Trying to pick between the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro. I want something for casual vlogging, travel stuff, and just daily use. The Pocket 3 looks awesome, but after tax it’s almost $1,000… that feels high. The Action 5 Pro costs less and seems tougher, but I’m not sure if I’ll miss the gimbal and tracking. Has anyone used both? Is the Pocket 3 really worth spending the extra cash?
Pocket 3 gives you much better video, no doubt. But it’s not waterproof and will break pretty easy if you drop it. Action 5 Pro is more like a tough action cam and it handles low light decently too.
The Pocket 3 does give a sharper image. Whether that’s worth dropping $1000 is your call. For that price, you could get something like a Canon EOS R10, though that doesn’t come with a gimbal of course.
Do you have kids? I had the Pocket 3 and now use the Action 5 Pro. I prefer how tough and simple it is. Starts up super fast too—just press the button and it’s filming in half a second. Great for short clips.
I own and really like the Pocket 3, but honestly these two cameras are so different. I use the Pocket for shots that I’d never use my old GoPro 8 for. They don’t overlap much for me.
If you’re near water or dusty areas, I’d go with the Action 5. I love my Pocket 3 too but it’s super delicate, so I mostly keep it for indoor stuff or studio setups.
I’ve got the Pocket 3 and the Action 4. If you can find a used Action 4, go for it—it actually has better video than the 5 Pro in some ways. I use the Pocket 3 for more pro-looking shots on my YouTube channel and sometimes to film the kids. The Action 4 is awesome for letting the kids film their own stuff or taking to the beach. I really like the Pocket 3, but I wouldn’t say it’s worth $1,000. For that money, you could build a whole camera setup with a lens and gimbal, though it’d be way bulkier.
I have both and use them for different stuff. The Pocket 3 is great for vlogging. I mount the Action 5 Pro to my bike or motorbike when I’m out riding.
Like others said, if you need the gimbal then go with the Pocket 3. But it’s not perfect—I’ve seen and had screen issues where it gets stuck halfway when closing. The Action 4/5 seems to last longer and I haven’t heard of major problems like with the Pocket 3.
