Specta Air / DJI Air 3 - SD Card Question

Hi all!

I have a Specta Air (DJI Air 3) and this morning I added the Samsung 512gb micro SD card (in the drone body), formatted it, and verified in the controller that it was read and could be seen.

Packed it into the hard case and went out to the coast…fired it up, and the controller noted something akin to ‘SD card error’.

Removed/replaced card…nothing.
Rebooted drone…nothing.

Any ideas?

I find it odd that three hours prior it was formatted and verified as registered via the controller but when at the coast (44 degrees F) it refused to register.

Can you verify if the same card works in any other device? Any other routine troubleshooting steps concerning removable media?

Also first time for me hearing of Specta but I’m reading it’s just a 1:1 repro of a DJI drone. I don’t want to be quick to point the finger at faulty software or hardware.

@Kim
It’s possible that it’s faulty…anything can be faulty from the factory.

I checked another device and it’s registering fine…I’ll have to perform some more TS.

What format system did you use? There’s a couple of different formatting types and one of them doesn’t work in DJI drones. I can’t remember the names off the top of my head right now

Edit: FAT32 vs. ExFAT vs. NTFS, I always have to format my micro SD in exfat for my drones. FAT32 or NTFS and it pulls an error. I don’t know why

@Dani
In the RC2 controller, it didn’t give me an option…just ‘Format’

20+ year IT admin and I was a little surprised I didn’t get a choice.

Maybe I’ll reformat it from my PC.

That’s where I have to format it from. I don’t know what the controller or drone does, but sometimes it doesn’t work

@Dani
I ended up reformatting it in my dji Pocket 3 and it’s registering now.

I went through 4 power cycles to verify.

So now we’ll see how it is when I take it out tomorrow.

Thanks!

It could be the read/write speed class of the SS card: A Guide to Speed Classes for SD and microSD Cards - Kingston Technology

@Abi
That one is on the lower end for recording 4k 30fps might have trouble with 60fps.
If your drone formatted the card itself then I don’t think it’s that. Idk I don’t have a DJI myself so I don’t want to say for sure.

@Adair
It ended up being fine after I reformatted in my dji Pocket 3.

And I’m shooting at 4k 30 gps as this was recommended to me as a more ‘natural’ movement.

Thanks for your help!
