Thinking About Getting Drone Insurance… Recommendations?

Hey everyone, thanks for checking this out!

I had a close call recently where a bird nearly collided with my drone. Thankfully, it didn’t happen, but it got me thinking… maybe I should get insurance since I use my drone for work.

Anyone got suggestions or experiences with drone insurance in the US? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

I’d recommend State Farm. Ask them for a personal articles policy. My DJI MP3 is insured for $5 a month. Way cheaper than the ‘Care Refresh’ plan from DJI.

Haha, ‘butt-puckering drone mishaps’? Yup, State Farm’s got you covered.

But isn’t the 2-year refresh plan $125?

$125/24 months = about $5.21 per month.

@Cameron
Yeah, but doesn’t DJI charge a fee, like $60 or $75, when you send in your drone for repairs? State Farm doesn’t have any ‘deductible’ like that.

That’s what I’m using too.

Are you looking for insurance on the drone itself, or coverage for damages it might cause to other things?

Mainly for the drone itself, but if there’s a policy that covers both, that would be even better.

@Tallis
For liability insurance, check out SkyWatch AI if you’re in the US. They’re pretty reliable.

State Farm does cover drones, but only if you’re using them for recreation. It doesn’t cover commercial use.

Good to know, thanks!

Check out TCP Insurance. We specialize in drone insurance, especially for those in entertainment.

Wait, you’re Part 107 certified but don’t have insurance? I thought that was a must-have.

I was under the impression it’s highly recommended, but not required. Hopefully, I’m not mistaken!

@Tallis
You’re right, it’s not required under Part 107. But a lot of jobs will want you to have it, and it’s definitely smart to be covered. Not something you should skip.

Exactly. It’s not mandatory, but not having it is risky. For commercial projects, just factor the cost into your fees or treat it as part of your operating expenses. Either way, get insured.

I use SkyWatch. Honestly, flying commercially without insurance that covers accidents is a big risk. They even cover privacy claims if someone says you invaded their space.

I wouldn’t call anyone dumb for not having it… maybe just uninformed.

I’d recommend checking out Global Aerospace.

State Farm’s Personal Property policy is great. $40 gets you $1500 in coverage (you can set the amount you need). No fault insurance, so if it breaks, just get a repair quote, and they’ll pay you within a day. It works for old drones too, and you can renew it annually.
