Trying to pick a drone for my dad… what would you go with?

So I got into drones about 8 years ago. A couple years back, my dad started showing interest while I was flying my Mavic 2 Pro. At the time, I had an old Mini SE a friend gave me, so I taught him the basics with that. He picked it up fast. Since then he’s flown the Mavic 2 Pro and more recently the Mavic 3 Classic. All of those are mine, though.

Now I think he’s ready to have one of his own. He’s learned most of this without using sensors, so I’m not sure what direction to go. Should I buy him something new like the Mini 3 or 4 Pro? Wait for the Mini 5? Give him my Mavic 2 Pro? Or go old school with something like a Phantom 3 Advanced?

Appreciate any advice!

I’d go with either the Mini 3 or Mini 4 Pro. Both are really beginner-friendly and packed with features that make flying easier and more fun. Or if you wanted to challenge him a bit more, maybe even consider the Avata 1 or 2.

He told me he’s not into FPV, so I think I’m going with the Mini 4 Pro.

Great choice, honestly. That one’s solid.

Mini 4K or Mini 4 Pro would both work, depending on how much you want to spend.

My budget’s around $1000, so I’m leaning toward the Mini 4 Pro.

Definitely skip the Phantom. I’d say look at the Mini 3—you can get a good deal on those now. Or if you’re okay with parting with it, just give him your M2P.

Honestly, I’d take a look at the Air 3 or 3S. Those are really good drones.

I’ll keep those in mind, maybe after he gets a little more confident.

Mini 4 Pro is probably the best pick here. But if you want him flying something a bit bigger, the Air 3 is also a great option. Just avoid older drones like the Phantom—they’re harder to find batteries and parts for now. The M4P is a powerhouse in a small package.
