What drone should I get for tracking wildlife in my area?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a drone package in the 500-700 CAD range to monitor wildlife over a forested area. I need both the drone and controller setup. The drone should have FPV capability for real-time viewing, a high-resolution camera or a good zoom function, and the ability to maintain a signal within a 1 km radius. At least 5-10 minutes of flight time would be ideal. Beginner-friendly features like stabilization and a battery indicator would also be great.

I’m not very familiar with drones, so I’m not sure if my expectations match the budget. Any recommendations would be appreciated! If I get set up, I’d love to share some footage of the wildlife I find.

For what you’re describing, an FPV drone isn’t the best fit. Something like a DJI drone would be more suitable. FPV drones are typically used for racing and freestyle flying, not wildlife monitoring.

I thought FPV was necessary because I need to see a live feed and my sightlines aren’t great. Would a DJI drone still let me pilot it remotely?

@Willoughby
Yes, DJI drones provide a live feed and are designed for this kind of use. FPV drones are more specialized for other activities.

That clears it up, thank you so much for explaining.

@Willoughby
Any DJI drone within your price range should meet your needs. No need to go for an FPV setup.

Your budget won’t cover a camera with non-digital zoom, but a DJI Mini drone should meet your other requirements. Keep in mind that Canada requires special licenses for flying drones beyond the visual line of sight. DJI Minis provide a real-time view either on the controller or a connected phone, depending on the model.

@Dior
Thanks for the suggestion! I saw the DJI Minis on Amazon, and their wind resistance looks good for my needs.

Watch out for weight class restrictions, especially if you use the plus batteries. These could push the drone into a higher category that requires registration and certification. Check local regulations, especially if you’re planning to use it commercially.

@Afton
I won’t be using it commercially. I just want to monitor predators that are scaring off deer and might attack my dogs.

The DJI Mini 3 would be a great choice for you. It’s one of the best consumer drones for beginners.
