I’ve been flying for years in a major US city and never had anyone ask about registration. I stick to the rules and fly safe, but honestly, nobody’s ever bothered me about it.
Got your Part 107? Posting drone videos on YouTube without it seems like a big risk.
Why does YouTube care if you upload drone footage?
Not YouTube, it’s the FAA. You could get in trouble if the footage is making money.
It’s all about your intent. If you’re flying for fun and then share the footage, you’re fine.
Feels risky, though, since YouTube has ads.
FAA cares about the flight’s purpose, not what happens with the video after. Sharing on social media isn’t going to get you in trouble.
That makes me feel better. I always heard YouTube ads could be an issue.
If you’re not making money, it’s not your problem.

Yeah, I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. Enforcing that would be a nightmare.

Yeah, I’m not too worried. Most drone flyers probably aren’t stressing over this.

I just got a DJI Air 3 and I’ve been really excited to test it out. I know I need to register it, but what if I fly it without putting the sticker on? Is it a big deal in the US, or can I just go ahead?

Just an update: I registered my drone but haven’t put the sticker on yet. Ordered one from Pilot Institute.

For now, just write the number on some tape and stick it on. Easier than stressing about it.

I fly mine around the street for fun, don’t usually record anything.

Your drone is still recording some data, even if it’s just temporary. Digital forensics could pull that info.

FAA’s got bigger fish to fry. As long as you follow the main rules, you’re probably fine.

I flew without the number on mine for months. Once I realized, I fixed it with a label. Nobody noticed. But it’s always better to just do it right.

It’s not the drone that gets registered, it’s you. But you still need to have the registration number on the drone itself.

The registration is tied to the drone’s serial number and needs to be visible on it, like a car plate.

Didn’t realize a sticker was needed… good to know!
