What happens if I fly my drone without the sticker?

I just got a DJI Air 3 and I’ve been really excited to test it out. I know I need to register it, but what if I fly it without putting the sticker on? Is it a big deal in the US, or can I just go ahead?

I’ve been flying for years in a major US city and never had anyone ask about registration. I stick to the rules and fly safe, but honestly, nobody’s ever bothered me about it.

What’s this about stickers and registration? I have a Mavic 3 I fly now and then but don’t recall registering.

If your drone weighs 250 grams or more, you need to register it even for recreational use. Newer drones have Remote ID, which broadcasts the drone’s info, so your flights are visible.

I’ll check if I’ve registered next time I start it up. Thought it was done when I set up my account.

The app won’t check for you. Go to the FAA’s Drone Zone to register.

The app won’t stop you from flying, but it’s a good idea to get registered to avoid any future hassles.

Got your Part 107? Posting drone videos on YouTube without it seems like a big risk.

No, my videos are just for family. They barely get any views.

I think it’s fine as long as you’re not making money off them.

Technically, YouTube makes money even if you don’t. That’s where the problem comes in.

Yeah, but it’s a stretch to think the FAA would come after you for that.

Pretty sure no one’s ever been busted for that.

Same argument would apply to posting on Facebook, I doubt that’s a problem.

I was told that even if I’m not making money, YouTube still does, so it’s risky.

Why does YouTube care if you upload drone footage?

Not YouTube, it’s the FAA. You could get in trouble if the footage is making money.

It’s all about your intent. If you’re flying for fun and then share the footage, you’re fine.

Feels risky, though, since YouTube has ads.

FAA cares about the flight’s purpose, not what happens with the video after. Sharing on social media isn’t going to get you in trouble.

That makes me feel better. I always heard YouTube ads could be an issue.
