What is the best controller for simulators and future drone use?

I’m new to FPV and starting with simulators before moving on to actual drones. I don’t have any equipment yet, so I’m looking to buy a controller first. Which controller works best with simulators like Tryp but can also be used with a variety of drones later? I’d like something portable, affordable, and future-proof so I don’t end up with a useless controller once I move past simulators.

I’d recommend one of the Radiomasters with internal ELRS. The Boxer is a solid choice for beginners, but it’s a bit larger. For something more portable and budget-friendly, consider the Pocket. If you like gamepad-shaped controllers, the Zorro is a good option, though I’ve heard it might have battery life issues (can’t confirm since I don’t own one). All of these should work with simulators.

Keep in mind that depending on the type of drone you fly, you’ll likely be carrying other gear, so saving a few hundred grams with a smaller controller might not make much of a difference. It ultimately depends on your budget.

You could also go for larger options like the TX16S with a color display, but honestly, when you’re flying with goggles, you won’t be looking at the display much.

I’ve been really happy with my Jumper T-Lite v2, especially after upgrading it with the AG01 mini gimbal mod. It’s one of the most compact controllers available.

The BetaFPV controller seems even more compact.

@Laken
I wouldn’t recommend anything that doesn’t run EdgeTX or support ELRS.

Edit: I see the LiteRadio 3 Pro supports EdgeTX and ELRS, and it can do 250mW ELRS compared to the T-Lite’s 100mW. That said, the Jumper T-Lite is cheaper and supports the AG01 mini gimbal mod. Also, BetaFPV gimbals have a bad reputation, at least based on forum comments.

@Ellis
The Cetus X controller has ELRS. I’m not sure about EdgeTX, though. It seems to have a nano bay for an external TX module.

You’ll definitely want EdgeTX for your controller.

@Ellis
Isn’t EdgeTX something you can add as an external module? If I need it later, I could attach it to the BetaFPV controller.

EdgeTX isn’t a physical module; it’s firmware that runs on the transmitter. Google it for more details.

Go for the Boxer with CNC aluminum gimbals.
