Whats your protocol for flying when other drones are nearby?

Recently went to the beach and caught the sunset, there were about 5 drones flying around in the sky. All I could think about was a midair collision happening. Curious what others do in this situation where they also want to fly their drone in a busy location?

Go talk to them and arrange de-confliction. Or don’t fly

Yeah this is what I figured. Be nice if DJI had a drone avoidance feature

They do, it’s called the pilot.

I’d prefer my drone not be easy to track thank you. Also an easy way is to fly at different altitudes. Surf photographers do this, stagger the drone about 20 feet in elevation and they just fly the X and Y axis with the right stick.

Don’t fly. Unless you’re training for synchronized flying I guess?

Use a spotter.

Here’s one from experience. Drones are becoming annoyingly common. Treat them for what they are—cameras in the sky. When you’re on a beach with hundreds of others taking pictures with their phones, you respect their space, and they respect yours (most of the time). The same applies to drones—mind the space in the air and move away if needed. Of course, there are jerks and absolute maniacs in the sky, just as there are on the ground—people who have no sense of respecting others’ space. If you encounter one in real life, you usually try to ignore them at first or move away if they continue being a nuisance. With drones, however, your first move should be to get out of their way immediately and land if necessary. Other people could be put in danger or get hurt due to someone else’s reckless actions, but you might still be held accountable. P.S. Don’t argue or fight. You’ll end up detained or even arrested and will find yourself paying for someone’s nose job.

Most definitely fly. Unless the beach is tiny. You’re all keeping an eye on your drones right? So should be easy to avoid each other, just stay at different altitudes. And watch video of Pipeline surf break in Hawaii sometime when the swell is pumping. There will be 20 drones in the air, all at about the same altitude. There’s a crash every now and again but it’s super rare. And that’s with a whole lot more drones than you’d have.

install missiles? “highh wayyyyyy toooo thhheee daaaangerrrrzooooooooone”

Go talk to the operators if you can see them. Otherwise, don’t hit them and be extra cognizant of the situation.

In all my thousands of flights, I’ve never flown with other drones nearby except for a friend standing next to me. Glad for that. Sorry you have to deal with that. Obviously, I’m no help :).
