I’m trying to figure out which drone would work best for tracking a car going 60+ mph in the California desert. Anyone have experience with this?
I’d go with the Avata 2 and get some practice in manual mode.

Do I need the Controller 3 to hit those speeds?

Yeah, you’ll need it.

The Avata 2 can technically hit 60 mph, but that’s really pushing its limits. If you’re trying to stay steady and make sharp turns, it’s not ideal. It’ll work for straight shots in the desert, but flying at max speed all the time is tough on the drone. You might want to consider a more powerful FPV drone, especially if you’re not already comfortable flying manual.
Have you thought about the original DJI FPV? It’s faster than the Avata and easier to fly than a full FPV drone. The camera isn’t great, but you could mount a GoPro or another action cam.

Exactly. The DJI FPV isn’t very durable or nimble, but it’s great for going fast in open spaces.

I agree. The DJI FPV will have no problem keeping up with a car going that speed.
Check out the iFlight Nazgul 5 Evoque. It’s perfect for this kind of thing.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll take a look.

If you’re considering the Nazgul 5, the HD version might be even better. It has a sturdier FC stack. Either way, an FPV drone like this would be a solid choice. If you stick with the Avata 2, you should definitely practice manual mode—it’s worth it for control at higher speeds.

You might also like the Geprc Mark 5. It’s another good option.
For hitting 60+ mph, the Avata 2 is probably your best bet. But keep in mind, if you’re in the EU, it’s limited to 40 mph (66 km/h).

Wait, even in manual mode? That’s frustrating.
@Nikon101
Yeah, even in manual mode. You could flash the US firmware to bypass it, but that’s technically illegal.

Honestly, it might be worth breaking the rule for that. Those speed limits are ridiculous.

Well, you did choose to live there.

What’s that got to do with anything?
I’d recommend the Avata 2 with a manual controller. I’ve tried a few different DJI drones, and the Avata series has been the most fun to use.
Avata 2 in manual mode is the way to go.
