Which drone should I get? Mini 4 Pro too expensive, looking at Flip, Mini 4K, and Mini 3

I’m planning to buy a drone this year, but I’m stuck trying to decide. I really like the Mini 4 Pro, but it’s out of my budget. The Flip looks like a good option since it’s cheaper but still has the same camera. The Mini 4K and Mini 3 are also interesting, but I’m not sure how good their cameras are.

Is the 48MP camera really worth it, or is 12MP enough? I’ve read that there isn’t much difference between 12MP and 48MP, which sounds strange to me.

I just want a drone for vacations, hiking, and casual use—not for big projects. Can anyone give me advice on which one to pick?

I went with the Mini 4K for $299 as a starter drone, and I’m happy with it for what I need. If you can stretch your budget a bit, DJI’s Certified Refurbished is a great option. You can find the Mini 3 for $335 or the Mini 4K Fly More Combo for $359. Honestly, I wish I had gone with one of those in hindsight.

How about the video quality? Is there a big difference? Is 4K at 60fps worth it, or is 30fps enough? I like the Flip because I think it has the best video quality of the three. But the Mini 3 seems better in windy conditions. Is the higher bitrate on the Flip really necessary? Also, are QuickShots and tracking actually useful? I noticed the Mini 3 doesn’t have tracking.

Most videos you see online are shot at 30fps. 60fps is better for action shots or if you want to slow things down a little.

As for bitrate, all these drones produce fantastic video. I don’t think you’ll miss the extra bandwidth if you choose an older model.

If you’re new to drones, it might be a good idea to start with a cheaper model and upgrade later once you know what features you really want. Here’s a video filmed on the Mini 3 Pro. It’s not a professional video, but you can see the quality is excellent.

Probably the Flip, especially since it has object detection even at night.
