Why is Lake Lanier marked differently for drones?

Does anyone know why the AutoPylot app shows Lake Lanier as okay to fly over north of the dam, but their website says no drones? It’s weird because south of the dam, it’s marked all the way to Atlanta. Just curious. Thanks, and happy flying!

The FAA allows flying there, but AutoPylot doesn’t account for ground restrictions.

Thanks for explaining. I’m new to drones and just have my TRUST certificate. I thought I only needed to check the AutoPylot app before flying, but it sounds like I should dig into more details next time.

@Drue
Hey there! Thanks for using AutoPylot! We try to keep track of ground restrictions and will look into the Lake Lanier area. When planning a mission, check the advisory labeled ‘State and Local Warnings’ for a link to all the drone rules we’ve found nationwide.

@Kirby
That’s awesome. I use your app every time I fly—it’s way easier to use than others I’ve tried. You all rock!

Is there a way for users to submit updates or corrections to the database?

Yes, you can email us at Hello@autopylot.io with areas we might have missed. We’d love to hear from you!

Even if the airspace is clear, the issue might be where you launch the drone. Property rules still apply.

I didn’t think about that. What if I have permission from a private property owner by the lake to take off and film from there?

@Drue
If the airspace is clear and you have permission to be on that property, I don’t see any reason why it would be a problem.

I’m not in Georgia, but check local rules too. In my state, you can’t fly a drone in state parks, but apps and charts don’t show that since it’s a local law, not an FAA rule.

Thanks for the tip!

A ‘No Drone Zone’ sign usually just means you can’t launch from that spot. Think of it like a ‘No Trespassing’ sign. You can still fly over the area if the FAA hasn’t labeled it as a ‘No Fly Zone.’ Just be careful about local laws, like privacy or noise complaints, which aren’t FAA issues.

@Thorne
Thanks for explaining. That really clears things up!
