Will DJI improve the Action 5 Pro’s image quality?

I’m wondering if DJI can bump up the image quality on the Action 5 Pro, not just by increasing bitrate but improving overall detail too. It doesn’t look as sharp as the Action 4. Do you think this can be fixed with an update?

Did the Action 4 get updates that made its image better after launch?

DJI has done it before, so there’s a good chance they will again. My DJI drones get updates pretty often. Haven’t had my Action 4 for long so I can’t say how often it gets updates.

They will if it starts affecting sales. Follow the money!

Yeah, about 3-4 months after it launched, there was an update that made a big difference in image quality. It was really noticeable. Check this link: DJI improves Osmo Action 4 image quality with firmware update

Wow, that’s exactly the kind of update I’m hoping the Action 5 Pro will get.

Wow, that’s exactly the kind of update I’m hoping the Action 5 Pro will get.

The Action 5 Pro uses a new Qualcomm chip, different from the in-house ones DJI used before. The chip is powerful, probably the best in any action cam, but DJI has tuned it down a lot to save on battery life. They might improve things through updates, maybe by adding a high bitrate mode that comes with a battery warning. Right now, I think the Action 5 Pro has better dynamic range and low light than the 4, but in high-motion scenes, the 4’s image looks cleaner. The standard color mode on the 5 needs work—it’s overprocessed and can look fake in bright light. They need to nail that normal mode. I’m hopeful they’ll tweak it, but who knows how much.

Comparing all the top cameras right now:

  1. GoPro: Great clarity in 5.3K, cool lenses, but small sensor, bad in low light, and a company struggling to innovate.

  2. DJI: Small, light, best battery life, great LOG profile, and fast CPU. But the image quality needs improvement, especially in the standard color mode where it looks overly processed.

  3. Insta360: Best for low light with an 8K sensor, but it’s big and heavy, has bad close focus, and the battery life isn’t great.

I wouldn’t buy the Hero 13—it’s the same old tech rehashed. The DJI has the most aggressive hardware updates but needs software tweaks. The Insta360 is great for low light or if you don’t plan to color grade.

I have the 5 Pro and totally agree. In D-Log, it’s great, but the low bitrate is annoying. I’m really hoping for an update that fixes this.

Great breakdown. Totally agree with you.
