Will they update the Supernight mode on Action 5?

I took a ride last night, and surprisingly, the regular mode with a high ISO looked way better than Supernight. I tried ISO 100-12000 and ISO 100-25000, both at 60fps, and they turned out great. But when I switched to Supernight, the quality seemed to drop a lot. This mode was a big advertised feature, so I’m hoping for an update.

Anyway, for now, I think I’ll stick with ISO 100-25000 for night rides and ISO 100-1600 during the day. Should I be changing anything else for night settings?

Here’s what I used:

  • Normal color
  • 4K 60fps
  • -1 EV
  • RS
  • 5500K
  • -1 texture, +1 noise reduction
  • Daily stabilization (I tried Sport mode, but it seemed a bit weird, so I stuck with Daily)

I’m pretty happy with the regular mode so far, but still tweaking it!

I’ve only tried Supernight and wasn’t that impressed. Took it to a pretty dark dinosaur exhibit with my daughter, and while the footage wasn’t amazing, it was still better than nothing. I’ll give regular mode a try next time.

Also curious, how high can you push the ISO without the footage turning to garbage? I want to lock the frame rate and keep stabilization on.

@Remy
That sounds fun! For that kind of setting, I’d go with horizon level, 4K 60fps, and ISO 100-25000 in regular mode (not Supernight). I also like using -1 EV to help with the glow from lights. I think it looks pretty good, but I’m no expert. I tried using my GoPro for similar stuff, and the footage was unusable—its ISO maxes out at 6400 and gets really blurry.

From what I understand, Supernight is just a simplified picture profile (and 8-bit), meant for people who want decent footage straight from the camera. If you’re looking for higher quality, you’re better off recording and grading in 10-bit DLOG-M.

@Wade
Good to know! For the comparison I did, both modes were 8-bit normal.

Your footage, along with that unicycle skateboard guy’s videos, totally convinced me to get the Osmo Action 5 Pro. I’m getting it next week. Thanks!

Glad to hear it! I’ve owned the Action 4 and a GoPro 10, and the DJI is definitely my favorite. What’s funny is I mostly make videos to teach my friends about motorcycles, and now they’re telling me, “Hey, your footage looks way better!”

Do you like the quality of my videos? I feel like I’ve dialed in the settings pretty well.

@Wynn
Yeah, man, you’ve really nailed the settings! I’m loving the rides, especially with the sunlight through the trees—it’s magical. I’m not into motorcycles, but I’m just getting into e-bikes, and your videos are close to the kind of stuff I want to shoot. The +1 noise reduction looks smooth but not too artificial. Nicely done.

@Wil
Thanks, I appreciate it!

I think the footage looks really good, especially for such high ISO in low light. No major jitters either. Did you use RockSteady or Horizon Balance for this? Was it on auto shutter speed? Thanks!

Thanks! It was RockSteady with Daily stabilization, auto shutter, 5500K, normal color, and 8-bit. I realized my monitor is only 8-bit, so I switched to that setting :sweat_smile:. I haven’t tried Horizon Balance yet, but I’ll give it a shot soon. Not sure how it’ll work on a motorcycle.

@Wynn
Super steady footage! Awesome, thanks for the info. I was worried about using high ISO at night, but it looks like it’s totally fine and worth being able to see the video :laughing:.

Yeah, in my opinion, ISO 100-25000 is the sweet spot! Maybe drop it to 12000 if you’re in a well-lit area like NYC.
