A Large Drone Keeps Flying Over My House Every Month… Any Ideas What It Could Be?

Wouldn’t be too shocking. This started happening a few months after I launched a site with information on advanced techniques to counter law enforcement tactics.

@Flynn
That could make sense. Unfortunately, sometimes local law enforcement can go off the rails with these surveillance operations, often more driven by personal motives than public safety. Keep an eye out.

@JoshuaThompson
The nearby city wouldn’t have anything like this; it’d likely be state or FBI if anything. Gives me more material to write about, I guess. I should really be trying to do some radio recon on it, but it requires some planning.

@Flynn
You could set up an RF logger with an RTL-SDR dongle and HDSDR software for free, good up to 2 GHz. You’d need a more expensive setup for 2.4 and 5.8 GHz though.

Here’s a guide: https://www.nk7z.net/sdr-rfi-survey-p1/

Would be interesting to see what you pick up!

@jud
I’m already set up to monitor up to six GHz.

hackrf for the win!

@Flynn
So, you’re not sure if it’s law enforcement’s drone?

@Flynn
You’re making yourself sound like a wanted criminal…

@Flynn
You put a target on your back and now you’re surprised?

I’m not really surprised.

Got it, my bad for the assumption.

This is one of the closest photos I’ve seen. It would’ve been a similar design to this. Unfortunately there wasn’t a name attached to the photo.

E: This photo appears to be a Yabhon from the middle east. The front fins are called “canards”, which helps a bit.

@JoshuaThompson
That was my thought. To fly out of sight you need special permits, so either it’s surveying or inspecting something. I haven’t found the exact model online; it has distinct narrow fins in the front, which I haven’t seen on other drones.

@Flynn

These are little personal aircraft that are heckin’ loud like a giant weed eater. From below they look like a large drone, but a scale bigger than you said.

Edit; I think they’re called the EZ something, I don’t remember.

@Bailey
It could be a Rutan Long-EZ or Vari-EZ.

@Bailey
Possibly.

@Bailey
Yeah, that was my first thought too. Love those planes!

@Bailey
That’s the model John Denver had, if I remember right.

It usually flies just above the tree line and then turns around, coming from a different direction each time. This time it flew directly overhead, but I lost it in the sun before I could get a photo.

Do you hear any specific sound from it?
