A Large Drone Keeps Flying Over My House Every Month… Any Ideas What It Could Be?

Technically speaking, it’s a UFO :flying_saucer:

That’s a word I never want to hear again.

It’s an acronym, actually.

Are you sure it’s a drone and not a plane? Could be a Rutan Long-EZ. Rutan Long-EZ - Wikipedia

Check ADS-B next time it flies by to rule that out.

@Nyx
Also, you could try a Remote ID app. If it’s compliant, it should show up there.

@Nyx
Not all fixed-wing aircraft are required to have ADS-B, and many don’t. Drones are also prohibited from using ADS-B.

If it’s manned, there’s a chance it could be broadcasting on ADS-B.

@Nyx
True, but not all manned aircraft have ADS-B either. If it does, then it’s likely manned, but if not, it doesn’t tell us much. Many things in life are only ‘non-zero’ possibilities.

I was responding to the idea that it might not be a drone, hence why I suggested ADS-B to help narrow it down.

@Nyx
Got it. Just keep in mind that while ADS-B can help, it’s not a guarantee of manned vs. unmanned status.

It’s flying below 2000 feet, so it might not show up on ADS-B.

@Flynn
If it’s over 400 AGL, it’s less likely to be a UAV.

Exactly, not all planes have ADS-B. And not all drones use Remote ID.

Could be a mapping drone, but given its size and that it’s fixed-wing, it would probably need a small runway. Possibly for crop monitoring or similar uses—unless it’s carrying ordnance, then that’s a different story!

@Gordon4
There are also fixed-wing drones with vertical takeoff capability.

Flightradar24 has a filter for drones and may show details on the aircraft, though you might need to start a free trial to access it (7 days). Worth checking if it shows up there.

I was just about to suggest this.

If you share your location, I could look it up for you.
