If I add an AirTag (weighing 11g without the holder) to a 249g drone, does that mean I need to register it? I’m guessing yes, but I want to double-check.
Any addition that takes it over 249g means it’s no longer under 249g.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. I was hoping it might depend on the class. Guess my drone delivery idea is out.
@Dru
DJI manuals for consumer drones are clear that any accessory breaks the class certification. For example, enterprise models like the Matrice 4E list a payload capacity, which is 200g in that case.
@Dru
Wait, you’re worried about an 11g AirTag but not the extra payload?

That’s called sarcasm.

I clearly missed the joke there. I need a special request to get that humor back.
Add a helium balloon instead.

The authorities might want to have a chat about that.

Helium has mass too. Even if it gives positive buoyancy, the drone’s weight still counts the same.

Technically true. Since we measure with a dynamometer, it’s force we’re observing. Doesn’t make a difference most of the time, but worth noting.
Yes, adding the AirTag means extra weight, so registration is required.
Registration depends on the take-off weight.
Did you check online if using an AirTag is even allowed as an alternative tracker?
For my Mini4k (under 249g), I added landing gear, a strobe light, and a tracker. I went ahead with registration for $5. It’s better to stay on the safe side.
Yes. And if you use DJI’s lightweight batteries to disable Remote ID, it means you can’t legally fly the drone. DJI should really have a setting to enable Remote ID with smaller batteries.
What’s the benefit of adding an AirTag to the drone?
Math seems hard for some folks.
You could shave off weight in other areas to make room for the AirTag. For example, switch to a lower-capacity battery, cut and re-solder wires, or remove unnecessary prints. It depends on your build details.
Drones with cameras require registration regardless of weight. If it’s over 249g, you also need an A1/A3 license.
