Any non-Chinese drones out there? What are my options?

I’ve been wondering about this too. I heard Skydio might be a decent choice from the US, and Parrot was also mentioned. Curious what others have found.

Yeah, neither of them make consumer drones anymore.

I’ve been using the Parrot Anafi for three years without any issues. It’s been great for real estate photos and has paid for itself.

Hey, how do you get into real estate drone photography? I have some experience flying drones and thought about turning it into a side hustle while I’m in college. Any advice?

@Nico
Most clients want both aerial and interior shots, so you’ll need to learn some indoor photography as well. You can start by contacting real estate agents and showing them a small portfolio of your work.

@Nico
Also curious how you make this work.

@Nico
It’s all about marketing. Put your work online, then email agents and brokers with a link to your portfolio.

What kind of examples should I put online? Anything from my drone?

@Nico
If you’re targeting real estate agents, focus on shots of properties and homes.

Yeah, they don’t want to coordinate multiple photo shoots, so if you can do both aerial and interior shots, that’s a big plus.

@Nico
I’ve been doing real estate photography for about a month and a half now. Look up companies that specialize in this field. I live in Florida, so there might be more opportunities here than elsewhere.

I think you can still find Skydio and Parrot drones new, even though they’ve been discontinued. Check big retailers like DroneNerds or B&H. Maybe even eBay if you can’t find them anywhere else.

Thanks!

From what I understand, even if the drones are assembled here, most of the parts are made overseas. Some companies are US-based, but nobody is building a true DJI competitor in the US. If you’re worried about data, I’m curious what info you think a drone could collect that isn’t already available through satellites. I work in utilities, and the imagery I have access to is pretty high-resolution.

@Blake
Honestly, it’s all about lobbying and fear-mongering. A lot of companies couldn’t compete with DJI, so they pushed the narrative that Chinese drones are unsafe. But really, if a drone can fly over your area, satellites probably already have way better data.

@Blake
It’s not just about my data. It’s about all the data from DJI users combined. That kind of real-time access can be a security risk.

I use a DJI drone with the standalone RC controller that doesn’t connect to the internet. How is it sending data back to China?

@Gale
Yeah, they’re actually made in China. EXO just tries to spin it in their ads.

Their website claims that all drone data is stored in Utah. Is that not true?

@Jaime
There’s no harm in choosing not to support a Chinese company with my money, though.

True, but it feels like you’re creating unnecessary stress for yourself. Either way, it’s not like you’re going to change anything.

You might be surprised how much of your tech is made in China already.
