Ascend asc 2680 vs dji mini… is it worth it?

Hey everyone,

I don’t really know much about drones, but I’ve been wanting one for filming.

I saw the Ascend ASC 2680 at Costco for $69.99. How does it stack up against more known drones like a dji mini?

My friend has a dji mini, and that’s about all I know about drones. Any thoughts?

To be real with you, it’s no comparison… The video quality on the Ascend is like an old flip phone.

these are the drones they want us to buy once dji gets banned smh

If you’re looking for something reliable and high quality, go with a Dji. If you want a toy with minimal quality, the Ascend’s fine.

Get the Mini 4k – it’s gonna be miles better.

@Washington
How does the Mini 4K compare to the Mini 2 SE? My friend has that one and says it’s ‘not too bad.’

I don’t have a Mini 2 SE, but I’ve got the Mini 4 Pro. It’s basically the same drone with an upgraded camera. Check out some reviews

It’s pretty much the same as the Mini 2 but with 4k video instead of 2.7k. It’s marketed as a beginner drone with features like return-to-home and quickshots but lacks obstacle avoidance, so you have to be careful. The Ascend, on the other hand, can barely manage any of that, especially with its lower-quality camera.

@Van
Thanks for the details! Just to confirm:

DJI MINI 2 SE:

  • No 4K video
  • Basic avoidance
  • Same performance
  • More affordable but an older model

DJI MINI 4K:

  • Can shoot in 4K
  • No avoidance
  • Similar handling
  • Newer and pricier

Ascend:

  • Probably not worth it

Am I missing anything big here? I looked up some comparisons, but it was hard to tell if they meant the same model.

@Zuri
You’ve got the basics right. Both the older Mini 2 and the ‘new’ Mini 4k are mostly the same, with the SE as a budget-friendly option.

The Mini 2 has a better transmission range and handles wind better than the SE, plus it can shoot in RAW. The SE lacks those perks.

That’s pretty much what I’ve found out so far.

@Van
Got it. So, the avoidance detection only comes on higher-end drones, right? Bit out of my budget for now.

Say I tried flying through an abandoned building window – would the avoidance sensor help with that?

When you say RAW photos, does that mean they’re unedited, so I’d have to adjust the color?

Would you say the Mini 4K is the better choice over the SE? Or are there reasons, other than price, to choose the SE?

@Zuri
Obstacle avoidance can be helpful but only in specific situations. If you’re shooting in open spaces, a Mini 2, SE, or 4K should do fine.

If you want real obstacle avoidance, you’d need something like the Mini 3 Pro, which is around $500.

I used a DJI Spark with front obstacle avoidance but sometimes turned it off to get certain shots. A lack of obstacle detection does make you more aware of your surroundings.

The Mini 4 Pro is also in the same weight category and has side avoidance, but that pushes the price over $700.

edit: for your window scenario, a Mini 2, SE, or 4k could make it, but it’s risky. A higher-end drone would prevent a crash unless you disable obstacle avoidance before trying.

@Zuri
Oh, and RAW format just means the photos are unedited. It’s easier to adjust things like color afterward.

The cheap packaging kind of says it all.

It’s like comparing a nerf gun to a real one.

Compared to Dji, this one’s not even close. When it comes to drones, you get what you pay for, even though big brands can exaggerate too.

Honestly, it’s fine to learn on. The video will be shaky, and it might end up in a tree since it has no GPS.

I still use my first cheap drone when I don’t want to risk my expensive one.

this forum is a mess wtf

Edit:

I’m not looking to go all out on an expensive drone yet unless it’s absolutely necessary.

I want something practical and reliable for filming.
