DJI Mini 4 Pro... Is there really a 120m altitude limit?

Hey everyone,

I’m planning to travel for a few months and was thinking about getting the DJI Mini 4 Pro. A friend told me that in late 2023, DJI introduced a hard 120m altitude limit on the drone. I tried searching online but couldn’t find a clear answer.

Some say it’s only enforced in Europe, while others claim it can be adjusted up to 500m. I know the legal limit is 120m in many places, but is this actually locked in the firmware?

Can anyone confirm if this is true?

Important detail: The drone isn’t limited to 120m total altitude—it’s limited to 120m above your takeoff point.

I’m in Sweden, and the limit here is 120m. But when I was in Colorado, USA, the limit was 500m.

So it’s location-based?

Yeah, it’s geo-restricted. I’m in Mexico, and while it’s set to 120m by default because of local laws, I can manually change it to 500m.

Yep, looks like it depends on where you are.

Yes, there is a 120m AGL limit. Not sure if there’s an official way to unlock it.

In the US, the legal limit is 400ft (about 120m).

Is this enforced everywhere?

As far as I know, yes.

Not always. In Europe, yes, but when I was in New Zealand and the US, there wasn’t a hard limit.

Yeah, I won’t be flying near cities. Mostly planning to use it in the mountains and waterfalls during my trip. I doubt I’ll even hit 100m most of the time.

@Nyx
Sounds great, have fun and fly safe!

Good advice! Even a small drone like the Mini can cause serious damage. There was a case in LA where one hit a firefighting aircraft.

@Beckett
Exactly. Better safe than sorry!

It depends on your location. In the US, it’s based on your takeoff point. In Europe, the laws are stricter. You can technically change the limit in some areas, but that could get you in trouble.

My drone’s max setting is 500ft, but legally, it’s 400ft in the US.

After my last update, it seems like I can turn off the hard limit. I haven’t tested it yet though.

Do you mean completely disable it or just adjust it up to 500m?
