A reminder for anyone with drones: flying over active wildfires is incredibly dangerous and puts lives at risk. These areas are often restricted for a reason, and breaking those rules can have serious consequences. Let’s do better
Kit Karzen really messed up big time with this one.

That airspace is locked down with multiple restrictions right now. Between firefighting operations, VIP security TFRs for Biden, and being near Santa Monica Airport, it’s already a mess. This guy deserves a serious penalty.
@Sage
I’m not too familiar with this stuff, but why do they enforce these TFRs for drones during fires?

Because a firefighting helicopter hitting a drone could cause a crash. Not worth the risk.

TFRs make sure first responders don’t have to worry about random people flying drones in the area. Drones are small and hard to see, but they can still cause huge problems for aircraft.
@Kale
Yeah, that totally makes sense now.
@Sage
It’s wild to think how restricted that airspace is with the president nearby and all the fire operations. This guy has 24k followers and is verified … he should definitely know better.

Defending someone interfering with firefighting efforts? That’s a wild take. Stuff like this is why more restrictions keep getting added for all of us.
@Sage
Unfortunately, minor celebrities rarely face any real consequences. This guy probably won’t either.

I’m usually pretty relaxed about rules, but flying in restricted airspace during an emergency is reckless. The FAA really needs to make an example out of people like this. Especially for someone with a Part 107 license … no excuse for not knowing better.

There are firefighters in the area waiting for the restrictions to lift so they can fly and do their jobs. Meanwhile, this guy is flying around taking pictures. Ridiculous.
Fire crews desperately need all the air support they can get right now. People like Kit put lives at risk, both directly and indirectly.
Looks like he deleted the aerial photos from his Instagram. Good job, everyone!
Don’t forget you can report him directly to the FAA.
Posting those photos online was a huge mistake. It says a lot about his judgment.

Someone posted here recently about their drone acting up when they flew near some ‘weird smoke.’ People definitely need these reminders.

From my experience, there are plenty of people here who need these posts.
