Got Some Amazing Drone Shots of the Aurora… What Do You Think?

I can finally check this off my bucket list, I just captured the Northern Lights with my drone tonight, and I’m so excited!

There’s a trick to getting around the 2-second shutter limit. If you shoot in manual mode, set the ISO to 3200, and use a 7-image bracket, it forces the shutter to stay open for 5 seconds. This solar storm was incredibly strong, and these shots ended up overexposed at 5 seconds with ISO 3200. Luckily, I always shoot in RAW, so I was able to fix them during editing.

Wow, those shots are incredible! What drone did you use for this?

Thanks! I used a DJI Mini 4 Pro for these shots :blush:

No way, that’s awesome! I’ll have to try it out myself next time. The northern lights were actually red near me.

@Kirin
Same here. I kept seeing warnings not to fly, so I held back last night. But after seeing your photos, I’m rethinking that!

I saved this post so I can check it out next time myself, haha.

@Kirin
Yeah, me too! Can’t wait to give it a try.

I managed to get a 360-degree shot with my Mini 3 Pro a few months ago, but it wasn’t as colorful as yours. Here’s a link to mine:

This was taken at Camden Lake near Yarker, Ontario.

I thought it might be Varty Lake.

Close, but it’s actually Camden Lake :wink:

Yeah, it’s Camden Lake near Yarker, Ontario.

Do you have any issues with your drone? I do 7 burst shots with my Mini 3 Pro for Astro shots, but I never get a 5-second exposure.

No problems here. My Mini 4 Pro can do a 5-second exposure in a 7-shot bracket for scenes like this. Otherwise, it’s capped at 2 seconds.

@Vega
That’s odd, mine is supposed to do 7 shots at 2 seconds each.

Well, that’s not exactly exposure bracketing if all shots have the same speed. True bracketing means varying the exposure across shots. Since my drone has a fixed aperture of 1.7, it adjusts the shutter speed while I set the ISO to 3200.

I’ve been in photography for decades and have taught it too. It’s not a bug—just knowing how to work with exposure settings properly.

@Vega
Ah, got it. My Mini 3 is limited to 2 seconds, even with bracketing.
