How are people crashing their drones all the time?

I’ve had my Mini 2 since 2022 and haven’t crashed it yet. I fly it like crazy, and only once did it hit a branch (it actually cut it lol), but the drone just stayed steady while I panicked. I’m really curious how people manage to crash their drones so badly, since all I see are crash pics here.

Lack of situational awareness.

Flying a drone takes motor skills and quick thinking. I’ve never crashed mine, and I think it’s because I played a lot of video games growing up.

Same here. Got my Mini 3 recently and it felt natural.

I have a 75-year-old relative who plays Call of Duty every day.

That’s awesome! I hope I’ll still be gaming at that age. Imagine what games will be like in 25 years compared to 25 years ago!

Got mine a few months ago and also picked it up fast thanks to gaming.

Do you ever fly in Sport mode?

No, I’m a photographer, so I stick to slow movements in Neutral or Cinematic mode.

Quick thinking for a stabilized drone? :joy:

Drones don’t really need quick reflexes unless you’re trying to get fancy. Crashes usually come from poor judgment, not slow reflexes. Most of the crashes I see are just simple mistakes like hitting trees or wires.

The experienced pilots are probably too embarrassed to post their crash videos haha.

Quick thinking is needed to avoid obstacles, wind changes, and trees. Have you flown before?

Truth. Flying my Mini 4 feels like playing a video game. I’ve spent hours in flight simulators and even nailed my first RC plane landing back in 2008.

Most crashes are from beginners flying into trees, over water, or in tunnels where GPS cuts out.

FPV drones are another story. You’re expected to crash those in the beginning.

Yeah, but most crashes posted here aren’t FPV drones. It’s usually camera drones with all sorts of sensors crashing in clear line of sight because people didn’t spot a branch or wire.

That’s why I’m getting a Neo for my first FPV drone. I’ll get the hang of it and then move up to something bigger.

Just keep in mind that with the Neo, you’re locked into DJI’s ecosystem for goggles and gear. There are other FPV options out there too.
