How do you get smooth gimbal joystick movements?

Hey everyone,

I’ve got a DJI RS4 Pro gimbal, and I’m having trouble getting smooth movements when combining joystick controls with my own motion. I’ve looked up tips on adjusting joystick speed, but I’m struggling to sync up my movements with the gimbal’s rotation.

Is there a way to program the joystick movement to make things smoother when moving around?

Honestly, practice is really the best answer here.

Have you tried using the cruise control function?

Haha, thought you were joking there.

No joke! It’s actually a technique you can use. Check out this video for more info: Link

@Niko
I thought you were messing with me because I’m using a DJI RS4 Pro gimbal, not a drone.

@Niko
Yeah, OP isn’t talking about a drone here.

To be fair, the original post didn’t mention it was for a gimbal, so that probably caused some confusion.

Try using your index finger and thumb for finer control, kind of like you’re ‘twiddling a nipple’ instead of using your thumbs like on a PlayStation controller.

You mean with my index finger?

@Ember
Yeah, index finger and thumb together. It helps with making smaller, smoother movements.

Why is this technique better? Not saying it’s bad—I’m just curious since I feel like I can hit smooth movements with my thumbs. Plus, using my third finger for the photo/video button seems tricky.

@Kim
Using your finger and thumb gives you more control over finer movements. For video, it’s especially useful since you need smooth motion. For photos, it doesn’t matter as much.

You could try adjusting the stick sensitivity in the settings; that can make a big difference.

It’s more than just sensitivity. The real challenge is starting and stopping joystick movements smoothly while I’m moving. It’s tough to get everything in sync.

Not to be rude, but a lot of these tips are in the manual. You might find it helpful to give it a good read. In some places, like here in the EU, it’s actually required before your first flight.

I’m not using a drone, just the DJI RS4 Pro gimbal.

Are you talking about the gimbal’s scroll wheel? I usually nudge mine a little, and once the angle pops up on DJI Fly, I know it’s about to move.

No, I’m using the DJI RS4 Pro gimbal, not a drone. Sorry for any confusion.

You could use waypoints to move the gimbal smoothly between points.
