I Was Doing Active Track While Passenger

I was doing active track while a passenger. Suddenly, that “Aircraft not connected to RC” error occurs and the screen becomes frozen! Luckily, I had already pressed Return to Home before that happened. BUT, what would I have done if I hadn’t had already had it returning to home when this happened?

I think the default setting is auto RTH.

Does it return home after a certain amount of time, or does it do it right away?

Should be right away as it loses signal. It happened to me too, and it worked.

@Teo
If you are connected via the RC, there’s a couple of seconds before it considers the connection dropped. I don’t know if it’s the case with newer models, but you could connect the Mavic Pro to your phone directly, and it would RTH after a longer period because Wi-Fi isn’t as stable of a connection.

@Shan
On my Air 3S, it hovers for a good 10-15 seconds before it raises itself to its RTH altitude. Then it stops there for another 5 seconds before actually returning home. I’m assuming that delay is there in case the remote can reconnect.

@Shan
What if you turn off the RC and then turn it back on again?

It happens within a few seconds. I turned my controller off, and it came back within seconds.

It does it pretty quickly after losing signal, maybe within 10 seconds.

Right away. I had the issue the other day, and it’s all new to me. It started to return home, then when the signal was found I could take control or leave it as RTH.

Story time: there was a drone photographer at Lake Bled, the most iconic photography site in Slovenia. After taking the classical image of the small chapel in the mid of the cyan blue lake, he spotted a nice country house and wanted to capture its reflection in the lake. Black wood front, green colored roof elements, would have been a really nice shot.

They flew closer to the country house, having direct LOS, less than 1km away when suddenly the connection was gone. Completely. The drone did not return anymore either.

Fortunately, the drone came home just fine. However, it seems the Slovenian government was not amused by the paparazzi taking photos during a security conference at a governmental estate :joy:.

To defend the pilot, they checked all local regulations and were in compliance with every posted rule. Now, as you can imagine, the pilot felt incredibly lucky that their drone returned in one piece and did not realize why the connection dropped until they continued on their hike, saw the estate, and noticed the convoys of black limousines and armed guards. That’s when they nearly panicked and felt incredibly lucky that no more came of the affair…

@Isle
Local fire department threw a HUGE FIT when I had my drone up during a fire in the afternoon, threatening to call the police for ‘interfering with their firefighting efforts.’ I asked if they had a drone; they did not. I would have brought mine down if they did. I offered to provide real live footage, as I had a nice 20" portable monitor; I was flying 350’ up and 700’ away (Mavic 3 Cine, 7x lens) and well within my rights.

They did take me up on the offer but called the police on me anyway. The state police couldn’t do anything, and the officer was clearly annoyed at them. Now they want to buy a thermal-equipped drone and are asking for donations, but they don’t have anyone certified to fly it, nor was I willing to do so again, and I’m actively against it.

Wow, rare firefighter L.

Yeah, small-town bullshit/drama.

@Blakely
Cool story, but how’s it related to the OP’s post?

@Blakely
Must be democrat firekarens.

It should return home automatically when the battery gets low. As long as you wait for it to return, you should be fine.

When the controller loses signal with the drone, it returns automatically.

It depends on the lose signal settings: RTH, Hover, Descend… Whatever you choose when the battery is low or when the yellow level is hit, a countdown to auto RTH starts. If you don’t cancel it, the bird will return. The only thing is, I don’t know what could happen if a strong wind alert shows up.

Everyone should reply with the same answers. :triumph:
