Managed to fly my drone in London today, legally

I managed to get my drone flying in London today while following all the local restrictions. It was surprisingly straightforward. I used a guide from this forum, which I found really helpful. Here’s the link if anyone’s interested: Flying a Drone in London - 2023 Guide. It talks about airspace restrictions, especially around the EGR160 area, which is only for helicopters. But flying over the Thames can get tricky because it’s a no-fly zone for helipads in central London.

Anyone else here flown a drone in London recently? How did it go for you?

This flight was made following all the restrictions in place in London.

I followed the guide mentioned above which I found easy to understand. The EGR160 airspace is mainly for helicopters, so it’s not an issue for drones. But one thing to be careful about is flying directly over the Thames, since it’s a no-fly zone for helipads in central London.

@Sage
Just so you know, the Thames heli route isn’t actually a no-fly zone, it’s just a caution area where there might be other aircraft nearby.

@Sage
Cool! Did you need permission from NATS to fly in R158?

@Sage
Don’t gotta prove anything to anyone man, just enjoy it! Just don’t crash into people, it really isn’t that hard.

LOL, the usual drone experts got excited to come into the comments until they saw the full headline.

Nice weather.

Is it really London without an overcast sky as a background?

Hey, at least it isn’t raining… yet.

Give it a few hours.

This is the perfect weather.

Isn’t this the only weather London gets?

How was the signal?

Not great. I mostly flew the drone directly above me because I was surrounded by restricted airspace (City of London and helipad zones). The signal wasn’t as strong as I’m used to when flying in open fields with my Mini 3.

@Sage
Why was the signal weaker? Was it interference from other radios or GPS signal issues?

I think it was a mix of both. I was flying near some big towers, which probably caused some interference.

Most cheerful British atmosphere.

One hell of a view, considering the amount of work it probably took to get approved :joy:

What drone did you use?
