My first drone flight was great, until it wasn’t

Well, that was quick. I just blew $1500 like it was nothing. Took my new drone out for a couple of flights. First one was awesome, I flew it up and down the driveway and used the ‘Come Home’ feature to land on my deck. Worked perfectly, and my dad and I were impressed. So I tried it again, but this time it shot straight into a tree, hit a branch, and dropped 30 feet to the ground.

I think the default Return to Home height is set to 40m? When you press it, the drone climbs to that height before coming back. Not good under trees. Hope you can get it fixed. You’ll learn from this, don’t worry.

@Calder I thought it was 100m?

@Samuel_3 You might be right. I lowered mine to 40m.

@Calder Same here. I set it to 50m since nothing around me is taller than 20m.

@Samuel_3 It depends on what you set it to. It should be higher than anything around. I go with 100m because there are some massive trees near the yacht club where I fly.

@Samuel_3 The default for me in the UK is 100m. I love the RTH feature on my Mini 3, but you really have to be careful with obstacles like trees, bridges, and even mountains. It can mess things up. I’ve set mine to 500m once while flying above a mountain range, which was crazy high.

@Delilah Pretty sure if the drone’s higher than the RTH altitude, it won’t descend until it reaches the landing spot. It only changes altitude if it’s lower than the set height.

@Calder Yeah, I learned my lesson. Won’t be pressing that button again.

@Jane The whole point is to learn. Read the manual!

@Miltan Definitely. Gonna do more than just watch a guide next time. Big lesson learned.

@Jane Only press it if you’re 70% sure it’ll land safely. Or maybe just for the last meter or so.

@Jane RTH kicks in automatically if the signal is lost (unless you change the setting). It can save you in tough spots! But always watch out for obstacles.

What should I do now? I messed up big time.

@Jane If you got it less than 48 hours ago, buy DJI Care. It’s like AppleCare+ for drones. You can buy it through the DJI Fly app, then file a claim, and they’ll repair or replace it for a small fee.

@Rhea I didn’t buy it during the prompt. Can I still get it?

@Jane Yes, you can still get it. Look for it online, log in, and register the drone. It should still work.

@Rhea Thanks a lot! My dad and I were loving the drone until it decided to take a nose dive.

@Jane If it’s been less than 2 days, you can still buy it and use the code, or do it through your account.

@Jane RTH uses GPS to bring the drone back home, but it’s not always super precise. It’s safer to manually land it once it’s close. Take over when you see it, or you’ll learn the hard way!
